Western Crete in May combines open tavernas and warm afternoons with green hills that have not yet dried under the summer sun.
When to go
The second half of May offers more reliable swimming weather while remaining noticeably calmer than July.
A route that works
- Use Chania for two nights and explore the harbour at dawn as well as after dinner.
- Drive south through Theriso Gorge or towards the White Mountains, stopping for a village lunch.
- Choose one western beach day and one inland day rather than racing between Balos, Elafonisi and Falassarna.
Where to base yourself
Stay outside Chania’s harbour lanes if you have a car. Kissamos is practical for the west coast and early boat departures.
Getting around
Buses cover major towns, but a car gives more flexibility for villages. Avoid driving into old-town pedestrian zones.
Food and reservations
Village tavernas may serve a short menu based on what is available. Ask for recommendations and allow meals to unfold slowly.
Practical note: Sea conditions can cancel boats. Keep one flexible day and do not force a famous beach into poor weather.
